Why More People With Breast Cancer Are Choosing Lumpectomy Over Mastectomy: Kate’s Story

The latest in cancer news suggest that more women are considering a lumpectomy versus a mastectomy. The Journal of American Medical Association surgery study analyzed more than 3.4 million breast cancer patients who had surgery between 2005 and 2017. The investigators discovered a shift in 2013. Between 2005 and 2013, lumpectomies were decreasing while mastectomies rose. After 2013, the trend began to reverse. The researchers attribute this shift to many factors. Patients’ surgical preferences can be influenced by the way doctors frame the risk of developing a future cancer, as well as how they describe the potential complications after surgery.
