RECEIVING A BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS
Hearing the words "you have breast cancer" sends you into a whirlwind of emotions, many of which are completely out of your immediate control. You are propelled into uncertainty. This is the beginning of the shared experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer.
When facing a medical trauma such as breast cancer, emotional support and education are vital to help navigate the treatment journey. H4TG aims to empower members to have a voice and choice in their treatment, addressing feelings of uncertainty, disconnect, insecurity, and vulnerability. By understanding the effects of trauma and navigating life-changing events, H4TG helps members feel more secure, empowered, and connected, fostering a supportive environment. Each diagnosis is unique due to type, stage, and cancer characteristics. Treatment options vary, and individuals must evaluate the risks and benefits of their values and lifestyle. Reactions to the disease vary greatly, and there are no rules for how to act or respond.
TREATING THE MIND AS WELL AS THE BODY
A cancer diagnosis is life-changing—not just physically, but emotionally. That’s why mental health clinicians are crucial to comprehensive cancer care. From the moment of diagnosis, patients often experience intense fear, grief, anxiety, and isolation. These emotional burdens can affect decision-making, relationships, and even physical health. Mental health clinicians provide evidence-based therapeutic support that helps patients process the trauma of diagnosis, manage uncertainty, and cope with treatment side effects.
Therapy offers a space to build resilience, reduce distress, and maintain hope. Mental health support improves quality of life, treatment adherence, and overall outcomes. It empowers patients to face cancer with strength, not just in body but also in mind and spirit. Mental health clinicians are not a complement to cancer care but a cornerstone. Treating the whole person means treating the mind as well as the body.
