September is lovingly sponsored by Scott Ashe

As we continue with our reflection on The Heart of the Matter, we invite you to explore the unique journey of our calendar ambassadors and learn more about what it truly means to be here for the girls. Our mission is grounded in compassionate support, emotional well-being, and the power of community. Together, we face breast cancer with strength, hope, and heart.

Ms. September, Sydney Johnson (diagnosed at 51 in 2022): Don't be ashamed or intimidated to ask for help

In January 2022, I walked into the ER at age 51 with acute stomach pain. Hours later I walked out with a stage 2 cancer diagnosis. As shock settled in, I called my dad. I wondered if it was harder for him to receive the news than for me to deliver it, especially after losing my mother to pancreatic cancer in 2016.

I have lived my life as an independent woman. My lifelong friends have always told me that my enthusiasm and positive outlook are inspiring. But this diagnosis, and the subsequent diagnosis of metastatic disease in January 2024, was different. I struggled to cope with the enormity of it all, in particular, the fears about me and my young son’s future. Even after I met the incredible H4TG community and was enveloped in support, my mental health was crumbling. I decided to enter a treatment center for medication management and addiction. It changed my life. It was in that safe space that I learned to welcome and accept the joy of being in an honest community with others accepting help—the joy of self-love and compassion. My life has always been dedicated to serving others. I want more than anything for my legacy for my son and the community of breast cancer fighters I’ve become part of to be one of mental and emotional fortitude and recovery!
