Ms. May – Silvia Garcia (Diagnosed at 31, 2020)

In March of 2020, I found a lump in my breast. Two weeks later, I received a phone call: Stage 2B TNBC and a BRCA1 mutation. I started the fight for my life with 16 rounds of chemo, double mastectomy, and a DIEP flap reconstruction. The pathology report showed no evidence of disease! Because of my BRCA1 mutation, my chances of Ovarian Cancer were 70% so I underwent a hysterectomy. I was determined not to break. But I came face to face with death. It changed me and left me bruised and scarred, inside and out. I was broken. I now understand that being broken isn’t a bad thing. God took the pieces and rebuilt me. He made me into something more beautiful than I was before. Tragedy and hardship are a part of life. Our power is choosing what we do with our pain. I turned my pain into purpose. I left my corporate job of 10 years to work for a nonprofit, the East Ga Cancer Coalition. I educate about prevention and screenings. I share my story to raise awareness. Cancer doesn’t discriminate and can affect any of us. My chances of a recurrence are close to 50 %. It can be scary, but I chose Faith over Fear. I’m not done. I have much living left to do!
