Ms. February 2023 | Diagnosed at 33 (2021)
I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2021 at the ripe age of 33 years old, with no family history or genetic markers present. After laughing at my doctor when the diagnosis was given, I knew I had a long road ahead of me. Even though I live in Williamsburg, VA, my whole family from NJ drove down and enveloped me in love, support, and care. Because I had such an amazing support system, I was able to look at all the positives coming from this experience: much-needed mother-daughter time; many opportunities to enhance my career as a Speech-Language Pathologist; and, most importantly, I discovered and embraced the “real Erin.” Not too long after diagnosis, I was referred to Here for the Girls, which was a game-changer for me... the incredible organization understood exactly what I was going through and provided opportunities to help me get through the difficult times with grace. I was even blessed with the aptly nicknamed Medical Dream Team (I came up with that on my own), who literally stood by my side through every treatment and hiccup that was thrown in my direction. While I hate the saying that “everything happens for a reason,” I knew that I would come out of this cancer experience with an understanding of just how loved I am; a brand-new sense of confidence; and a gaggle of Boober Sisters who will always be dear to my heart. I realized I had access to a platform to spread awareness and foster a community of transparency and support for all who may need it, and I am beyond excited to have the opportunity to be your Miss February 2023!
ADVICE: I knew that I would come out of this cancer experience with an understanding of just how loved I am.
